Online Sports Betting Blocked in Central New York

A large portion of Central New York and western New York might be left out of the proposed online sports wagering initiative. There are talks that online sports betting would be blocked in Central New York because Native American tribes have exclusive gambling rights.

According to casino news reports, Governor Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers discuss a deal that would allow online sports betting in the state. They think that revenue from the activity can help reduce the budget deficit.

However, there are concerns that the plan excluded areas where Native tribes have exclusive gambling rights. In Central New York, those areas are Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Lewis, Oneida, Madison, Onondaga, Herkimer, Otsego, and Oswego counties.

Blocked in Central New York

The Oneida Indian Nation has exclusive gambling rights in those counties as part of the 2013 deal with the state government. The compact included potential mobile sports betting. Also, the issue could affect western New York counties, such as Niagara, Cattaraugus, and Erie. That’s where the Seneca Nation has exclusive gambling rights. However, their compact with the state has different terms.
