Monday Night Football Betting Odds – Eagle Plan: Run it Down Vikings’ Throat

Monday Night Football Betting Odds – Eagle Plan: Run it Down Vikings’ ThroatThe Minnesota Vikings were able to shock the Green Bay Packers last week. But they did it not necessarily with a big display of offense under new coach Kevin O'Connell, but with a defensive effort that shut down Aaron Rodgers and his new group of receivers. Now they face a different challenge as they go on the road to face the Philadelphia Eagles in a Monday night game that is set for 8:30 PM ET at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

According to PPH Sportsbooks, in their 23-7 win over Green Bay, the Vikings limited Rodgers to just 5.8 yards an attempt. Of course, that's not to say that they didn't get some production.

Justin Jefferson reinforced his reputation as perhaps the best wide receiver in the league, as he caught nine passes for 184 yards. As is often the case with Minnesota, there was a ground component as well, with 90 yards out of Dalvin Cook.

Oh boy - speaking of that ground component, the Eagles brings that in a big way. Last year they were the best in the NFL on ground, and ran it most frequently. And in their win over Detroit last week they had 216 rushing yards. What they have that Minnesota doesn't is the quarterback who can really run. And Jalen Hurts - who hasn't shown that he can carry a team with his passing alone - got some help in the off-season with the acquisition of AJ Brown, who had 155 yards in the 38-35 victory over the Lions.

If Philadelphia can get something special out of former Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith (who had no catches last week), there may be nothing stopping them from winning the NFC East.

Monday Night Football Betting Odds – Eagles vs Vikings

In the MNF betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Eagles are the favorites at home:

Philadelphia Eagles -2.5 (-120)
Minnesota Vikings +2.5 (+100)

Over 49.5 Points -110
Under 49.5 Points -110

Minnesota has more than a "Big Three" of Jefferson, Cook and QB Kirk Cousins. That's because Adam Thielen remains one of the better possession receivers in the league. But there are other aspects of this operation that might be a bit shaky. We'll have to see whether the defensive line can hold up over the long haul.

Let's use some analytics for a moment. In the first week, the Vikes' defense was last in the NFL in "Stuff Rate," meaning they didn't do a great job of holding opponents without a gain. The Eagles' offensive line was best in that category. So there is a potential mismatch.

There is something else of interest for those of you who like "trends." Kirk Cousins is one quarterback who has never been known as a "prime time player." In fact, in games that have been televised in prime time, his record is 8-17. One Monday Night Football, he is 2-9.

The Eagles carry some fundamental advantages into this game, namely their ability to run the ball, not just with Hurts but with Miles Sanders, that will make a difference here. So yes, a nod to the home team here.
